Jesus said, "I have come to cast fire upon the earth, and how I would that it was already blazing" (Luke 12:49). This "fire" for God was meant to blaze in the hearts of every Christian man and woman, not just nuns and priests in monasteries. In his book, Fire Within, the late Father Thomas Dubay, S.M. carefully explains how all the children of God are designed for mystical prayer and the contemplative life. We were meant to be "filled with the utter fullness of God" (Eph 3:19), to enjoy deep prayer and a lively interior life that will enable us to soar to the heights where we can enjoy the unimaginable gifts God has in store for those who truly love Him.
Fire Within is a brilliant and yet easy-to-understand expose of the Catholic mystical tradition as taught by the great Carmelite Doctors of the Church, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. Father presents the saints' teachings on the four stages of prayer, the seven mansions of the soul and the two dark nights. He details the conditions for growth, the signs of advancement, how to find freedom in detachment, and to realize the glory of transforming union. Fire Within is a comprehensive look at the contemplative life designed to help us discover how we too can become disposed for this inflowing of divine fullness that will ignite a"fire within" us.
