Fr. Wade Menezes
In our day and time we are witnessing the full flowering of the seeds planted in the cultural mindset dating back to the Age of Enlightenment of the 18th century. Rationalism - the idea that posits man's reason as the legitimate and sole authority - held sway then. More a set of values than a unified philosophical perspective, it held suspect customs, morals, objective truth, and traditional institutions including religion-- creedal religions in particular.
Man's mind was god and science was its handmaiden. Secularism and relativism have grown out of this ideology and have infiltrated the cultural mindset like cancer invades the body. Indeed, this obstacle to living the abundant life is virulent, blinds us to truth, and leads us far away from the abundant life Jesus intends for us.
